Description
Before New York City had a bridge or tunnel crossing, a network of ferry routes traversed the waters around the city. In the early 1900s, over 140 ferry services operating in the surrounding waters only to be superseded by bridges, tunnels, and subways. Today, ferry usage is a key part of the city’s transportation network, providing an attractive alternative to the overburdened subway system and crowded roads.
