Description
The seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, the Gothic-style cathedral is a prominent landmark in Midtown Manhattan. Work began in 1858 but was halted during the Civil War and resumed in 1865. When the spires were added in 1888, the cathedral was then the tallest structure in the city. A National Historic Landmark, the cathedral features two pipe organs and can accommodate 3,000 people.
